If you've received one of the following error messages:

E_AUTH_BAD_DEVICE_KEY
E_AUTH_BAD_DEVICE_KEY_OR_PKCS12

This message occurs when, your device is no longer happy with your authorisation credentials. This can sometimes happen with a new device and a restored a backup. Specifically, the underlying Adobe Digital Rights Management (DRM) doesn’t “trust your new device” and you simply need to re-authenticate.

Solution 1: Deauthorise and reauthorise Adobe DRM

Solution for when you’re already signed in to your eReader but have trouble accessing your books.

Box of Books Reader for iOS

  1. Click “Info” at top right of Box of Books Reader for iOS
  2. Click “Deauthorise” and confirm
  3. Click “Authorise” and enter your School email and Bobby Pin

After following the above steps, please try downloading and opening your book again.

Box of Books Reader for Mac

  1. Open the Box of Books Reader
  2. Hold Command-Shift-D to deauthorise the Reader
  3. Enter your school email and Bobby Pin and press continue.
  4. Select ‘Really Sign Out’
  5. Reopen the Box of Books Reader, and sign-in again with your school email and Bobby Pin.

For Box of Books Reader for Windows

  1. Open the Box of Books Reader
  2. Go to ‘Edit’ then ‘Deauthorize App’
  3. A message pops-up advising it was successful
  4. Reopen the Box of Books Reader and go to 'Edit' and 'Authorise App'
  5. Enter your school email and Bobby Pin and sign-in.

Solution 2: Update Keychain (Mac)

  1. Choose Utilities > Open Keychain Access Application. 
  2. Select the login keychain and unlock it by clicking the padlock icon next to it. 
  3. On the right side, there’s a list of applications. Search for and double-click on “Box of Books”.
  4. Select the Access Control Menu and select "Allow all applications to access this item" and save changes.
  5. Launch the offline reader, and you'll able to authorise it now.
